Symptoms and Support
What is menopause and when does it occur?1
Menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstruation following the cessation of ovarian function. A woman is considered to have “entered” menopause when she has gone 12 consecutive months without a period. In the European population, it occurs on average at age 51.
Menopause is not usually sudden. There is a transitional period during which the steadily decreasing production of estrogen by the ovaries causes menstrual irregularities. Perimenopause, or the climacteric, is the period from the onset of menstrual irregularities until one year after menopause and usually occurs between a woman’s 45th and 55th years. One year after menopause, the postmenopausal phase begins, into which the woman now enters permanently.
Is it possible for menstruation to stop before the age of 45?1
2% of women under 40 experience Premature Ovarian Failure (POF), in which menstruation stops before the age of 40 due to damage to the ovaries
What symptoms occur during perimenopause and menopause?1
Due to the decline of estrogen levels during perimenopause, our body’s chemistry is disrupted, and for this reason, it is perfectly normal for certain symptoms to appear. These symptoms vary in type, intensity and duration from woman to woman. Even the same woman may experience symptoms of different intensity during perimenopause than those during menopause. According to studies of the European population, over 80% of women experience symptoms during the transition to menopause, with around half of these symptoms being classified as severe.
Given the increase in life expectancy to 85 years, we must realize that women will experience menopausal symptoms for about 40% of their lives.
