Rodi Fertility
Pregnancy, a unique experience worth living!
Every human being has a right to the enjoyment of parenthood. But infertility can negate the realization of this basic human right.
185 million people worldwide face fertility problems and 25 million of them live in Europe.
The fertility journey includes the successful initiation of a pregnancy as well as its positive outcome. The miracle of life is a long journey and calls for good and careful planning of the sailing course.
Analysis of the latest data shows that at least 1 in 4 pregnant women will miscarry, with this rate increasing with age, while a significantly higher number of couples trying to become parents today are faced with the experience of back-to-back miscarriages.
Miscarriage frequency and recurrent miscarriage syndrome remain a critical area of management.
The immune system is decisive in the smooth outcome of a pregnancy.
Pregnancy outcome and NK cells
NK cells, whose initials come from the words Natural Killer cells or otherwise natural killer cells, are the basic cells of the immune system.
In a normal pregnancy, these cells do not act as killers, but instead create a microenvironment that is compatible with the pregnancy and supports the normal development of the placenta.
Studies have shown that increased numbers and increased toxicity of NK cells in peripheral blood are associated with miscarriages of chromosomally normal embryos, as well as failure of implantation of fertilized eggs.
Studies have shown that in women with infertility or a history of miscarriage, reducing the number or toxicity of NK cells increases the chances of a successful pregnancy and reduces the risk of miscarriage.
Hormones and fertility
Why is Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH) testing important?
Measuring the levels of FSH and LH in the serum is one of the most common tests for the control of ovarian function and fertility. Let’s see what each one is:
Follicle Stimulating Hormone FSH: is the follicle-stimulating hormone released into the bloodstream by the pituitary gland. It stimulates the ovary and promotes the development of follicles.
Luteinizing hormone LH: produced by the gonadotropic cells of the pituitary gland. Women with elevated LH levels may be infertile as LH directly affects the reproductive system.
Elevated FSH levels in women mean:
- low ovarian reserves
- significantly lower chance of pregnancy than women with normal FSH.
With age, ovarian reserves decrease and the ovaries do not produce eggs, or produce very few and of low quality.
Statistically, the chances of a successful pregnancy in women with elevated FSH and LH levels are low.
If the FSH value is below 10 mIU/ml then it is at normal levels.
When FSH levels are above 15 mIU/ml the chance of pregnancy decreases significantly.
